

Neil Flanagan

Neil Flanagan is a licensed architect with twelve years of experience in navigating complex entitlement processes, realizing advanced sustainability agendas including net-zero, and breathing new life into well-loved educational institutions. Neil joined Maginnis + del Ninno in 2017 after working in DC, Moscow, and New York City, and returned in 2025. He is passionate about creating environments that foster individual flourishing amidst global challenges.
Neil has also written on architecture and urban planning in both popular and academic venues since 2009, with a particular emphasis on the history of his hometown, the District of Columbia. He is currently completing a book about the ways the founders of American urban planning experimented on Washington's neighborhoods before World War II, expected in 2027. For this project he has received multiple grants and holds a Humanities Scholar-in-Residence fellowship from the Heurich House Museum.
Neil is co-founder and treasurer of the DC Archives Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization that supports the preservation of the District of Columbia's most comprehensive historical resource, the DC State Archives. In this position he was instrumental in spurring the development of its first purpose-built facility and securing $158M in funding despite severe budget cuts.
